Under the title "Space & Transformation: Liveable Futures", the IOER Annual Conference 2022 on 22 and 23 September will focus on fundamental change in neighborhoods, cities, and regions. The conjoined Summer School on 21 September will offer early-stage researchers space to discuss their work. Submissions were possible until 15 April. We are currently preparing the programme of the conference.
22 May is International Day for Biological Diversity. This is when the value of nature and its services once again becomes more prominent in the public consciousness. But how can biodiversity and ecosystem services in general receive more attention - especially in national economic reporting and the balance sheets of companies? The Bio-Mo-D project, coordinated by the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER), is looking for answers to this question.
On January 26, the Brandenburg Land parliament took stock of the structural change process in Lusatia region. The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) was invited to the meeting of the Special Committee on Structural Development in Lusatia for an expert statement. Dr. Sebastian Heer from the IOER reported to the committee in particular on the workshop process (Werkstatt-Prozess) and evaluated the process from an expert perspective.
Insects in nature conservation areas are heavily contaminated with pesticides. This is shown by a study recently published in the journal "Scientific reports". It is part of the interdisciplinary research project "DINA - Diversity of Insects in Nature protected Areas", which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) contributed to the study with a spatial analysis. It shows that insects in nature conservation areas could be better protected from pesticides by additional buffer zones.
The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) and the City of Dresden want to work even more closely together in future on issues of sustainable urban and regional development. In doing so, the partners will jointly explore new ways of local collaboration between science and practice. This is provided for in the cooperation agreement signed by Marc Wolfram, Director of the IOER, and Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert on Monday, 6 December 2021.
A public kick-off event at the end of November marked the official start of the GOAT 3.0 project (Development of a digital accessibility instrument for a balanced spatial and urban planning). The Geo Open Accessibility Tool - GOAT 3.0 will be developed together with end users in a co-creative development process and with significant participation of the IOER until October 2024. The tool will intelligently combine diverse spatial and traffic data and, using the accessibility approach, enable scientifically based, sustainable urban and traffic planning.
The HeatResilientCity project has won the German Sustainability Award for Research 2022. The transdisciplinary project, coordinated by the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER), is researching how densely built-up urban districts and the people living there can be sustainably protected from summer heat. The award ceremony took place on the evening of 3 December in Düsseldorf and as an online event.
Biodiversity is existential for human life and survival. How can we protect and preserve it? What solutions does the Resource Nexus offer in this context, i. e. integrated perspectives for dealing with vital resources? These questions are the focus of the fourth international Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC2022). For the short-term and very successful realization of the international Dresden Nexus Conference 2020 as a virtual event (eDNC2020), the organising institutions IOER, UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden receive the eku – Zukunftspreis (eku – Future Award) of the Saxon Ministry of the Environment (SMEKUL). The organisers of the eDNC2020 are awarded in the category "eku erfolg Wissenschaft" (eku success science). The contribution was selected by an expert panel from a total of 63 submissions.
The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development is jointly funded by the federal government and the federal states.
