IOER at the German Sustainability Science Summit 2021: Call for poster contribution open

On 8 and 9 July 2021 the German Sustainability Science Summit 2021 will take place as an interactive virtual event. The IOER is organising three sessions on different aspects of its research work. The summit continues the series of the German Future Earth Summits organised by the German Committee Future Earth (Deutsches Komitee für Nachhaltigkeitsforschung, DKN). Registration for the Summit is open from 18 to 28 June.

The summit will provide a platform for exchange on the latest scientific findings in the field of sustainability research. Besides scientific sessions with presentations and discussions, a panel discussion, an interactive poster session and other interactive formats will provide room for exchange, discussion and networking across the international science community working on sustainability related topics.

In collaboration with partner institutions, the IOER will organise the following sessions:

8 July 2021, 16:30 – 17:30 CEST (Scientific Session Block I, parallel sessions)

Session SSI4 - Critical reflection on power relations and the transformative role of participation in sustainability science and governance
Reflecting upon calls for sustainability science to be transformational and for governmental strategies to mobilise sustainable action via participatory approaches, this workshop discusses ethical aspects of participation in sustainability science and governance. Is it sufficient when participatory approaches lead to sustainability transformations or do they also need to be legitimate, fair, transparent and/or enlightening?

Session SSI6 - Sustainability from an Integrated Earth System Research View
There are accelerating impacts of human activities on the Earth system despite international environmental policies such as the Paris Agreement. The effects are increasingly observable as indications of the 'Anthropocene'. This poses new scientific questions with relevance for the future of civilization. The session covers an introduction of the 'Integrated Earth System Research' and will be hosted by the Leibniz Research Network of the same name.

9 July 2021, 13:20 – 14:20 CEST (Scientific Session Block II, parallel sessions)

Session SSII4 - Spatiality in sustainability science: Contrasting perspectives to accelerate transformation
This session will bring together different contributions on the role of spatiality in sustainability sciences with a view to scope and specify novel orientations for research, policy and practice. It particularly aims to identify priority areas for interdisciplinary collaboration.
