Further development of the nationwide indicator set for ecosystem services

Background

In the context of the European Biodiversity Strategy 2020 (EC 2011; Target 2, Measure 5) Germany has been requested to map and assess the ecosystems and their services at national level together with all EU Member States. The nationwide mapping and assessment follows the basic recommendations of the European MAES working group ("Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services"). Aspects of biodiversity as the basis for functioning ecosystems and the provision of ecosystem services (ES), but also the links to human well-being are emphasised.

Ojectives

  • Analysis and thereby a better understanding of the development of the area of different ecosystems in Germany;
  • Further development of existing indicators for the status and services of ecosystems in Germany;
  • Completion or filling of gaps due to newly available data in the meantime.

This builds on the results of previous projects: "Development and implementation of a methodology for the nationwide assessment of ecosystem services in the context of the implementation of Target 2, Measure 5 of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2020", "Valuation of Ecosystem Services".
