Exhibition at the Görlitz Administrative District Office shows visions for a sustainable Lusatia

How can Lusatia develop by the year 2050 - without coal mining and instead ecologically sustainable and livable for the local people? This was the question addressed last year by the planning lab "Raumbilder Lausitz 2050" (Spatial Imaginaries Lusatia 2050). Four interdisciplinary teams designed their visions for the region in structural change as multi-layered spatial images. Until 31 August, the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) is showing the results in an exhibition at the Görlitz Administrative District Office (Landratsamt). They can also be read in a brochure.

Visions, thought experiments, food for thought - that is what the "Spatial Imaginaries Lusatia 2050" are supposed to be and offer. They show how much potential there is in the Lusatia region and what role regional planning strategies can play in shaping regional structural change. Four planning teams from Germany and abroad as well as numerous experts were invited to design, discuss and further develop approaches and visions for the future of Lusatia within the framework of the planning lab "Spatial Imaginaries Lusatia 2050 - Designing Sustainable Transformation". The results make the diverse possibilities of the region visible. These are not only to be found in its small and medium-sized cities or in the special features of its landscape, such as lakes and sometimes rugged landscapes. They can also be found in the numerous initiatives, networks and committed people as well as in traditional and new technologies and business ideas. The spatial imaginaries illustrate how these potentials can be activated and linked in order to further develop Lusatia into an attractive region and to sustainably promote a “good life”. They are aimed primarily at urban and regional planning professionals, but non-experts can also discover interesting ideas for the region in the visions.

The exhibition can be seen until the end of August at the Görlitz Administrative District Office (Landratsamt Görlitz), Bahnhofstraße 24. It is open during the regular opening hours of the office. Admission is free.

In addition to the exhibition, a brochure documents the process of creating the spatial imaginaries. It presents the concerns, procedures and tasks of the planning lab, provides extracts of analyses and images, and allows the four planning teams as well as the many other experts involved to have their say.

Background
The planning lab "Spatial Imaginaries Lusatia 2050 - Designing Sustainable Transformation" is part of the research project "Lausitz Project - Scientific support of the transformation process in Lusatia Region". From March to September 2021, four interdisciplinary teams designed visions for a sustainable integrative development of Lusatia region. To participate in the planning lab, the teams were selected from 24 national and international applications. The visions for the future now serve as the basis for further strategy development in the region. Experts from politics, local government, and regional and structural planning will come together in various transfer workshops to discuss implementation options for the spatial visions as well as more strategic and continuous cooperation for the structural development of Lusatia.

The project "Lausitz Project - Scientific support of the transformation process in Lusatia Region" is being carried out primarily at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Transformative Urban Regeneration (IZS) in Görlitz, which is run by the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) in Dresden together with the International Institute (IHI) Zittau of the Technische Universität Dresden. The project will run from October 2018 to January 2023 and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
