Clara von Simson Award for Josefine Gottschalk from the IOER

In January, Josefine Gottschalk, a researcher at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER), received her second award for her Master's thesis on marine conservation. Following the 2022 Research Award of Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND), she now received the Clara von Simson Award from TU Berlin. With this prize, the TU Berlin honours the best female graduates from the natural and technical sciences.

On 19 January, Josefine Gottschalk received the first prize of the Clara von Simson Award in Berlin. It is awarded by the Main Women's Representative of the TU Berlin and is endowed with 3,000 euros. Twenty-two female graduates applied for the prize. Josefine Gottschalk received the award for her Master's thesis "Scratching Below Surface. Is the maritime spatial planning of the European Union ready for adequate marine conservation?", which she wrote in the Environmental Planning Master's programme at TU Berlin. Josefine Gottschalk has been working as a research associate at IOER since January 2022. In the Transformative Capacities research area, she is conducting research in the MSP-SpaCeParti project on regulatory options for marine spatial planning contributing to sustainable coastal fisheries.

In addition to academic achievements, the Clara von Simson Award also recognises the socio-political commitment of the applicants. Josefine Gottschalk is involved in various projects and initiatives for children as well as in environmental and climate protection. The scientist would like to use the prize money to add an additional qualification to her diving certificate, which will enable her to help reforest coral reefs in the future.

In November 2022, Josefine Gottschalk had already received the 2022 Research Award of Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND) for her Master's thesis.
