Green Network Ore Mountains

Transboundary synergies between Natura 2000 sites and rural development in the Ore Mountains

Natura 2000 sites as an asset for rural development

The Ore Mountains ridge features many valuable nature areas on both sides of the border between Saxony and North Bohemia. A high number of Natura 2000 sites are located here. The outstanding natural value of the mountain ridge provides an attractive environment for living and making business as well.

Protected areas can become the basis of various forms of economic activities within the region, for example in the fields of organic farming and forestry, nature-friendly tourism, and environmental education.

Exploring synergies

The project aims at identifying and strengthening synergies between nature conservation and rural development with a special focus on the many Natura 2000 sites in the Ore Mountains. The project shall also contribute to improving the local visibility of the Natura 2000 network and to developing new products and services with regard to tourism and environmental education. Furthermore an enduring transboundary cooperation network shall be initiated.

Collaborative preparation and implementation of strategies and concepts

The project is targeted on the ridge area of the Ore Mountains in the Free State of Saxony (Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, Landkreis Mittelsachsen and Erzgebirgskreis) and in the Czech Republic (Ústecký kraj and Karlovarský kraj). It is intended to analyse strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) with regard to nature conservation and rural development in the project area as a first step.

In the next phase strategies and detailed concepts shall be prepared in cooperation with local stakeholders. The objective is to exploit transboundary synergies between conservation and rural development, particularly with regard to agriculture, tourism and environmental education. Finally selected measures shall be implemented in the frame of the project.
