Information and navigation to urban green spaces in cities

Green spaces play an essential role in ensuring a high quality of life in cities in spite of their growth and subsequent densification, as they have a positive effect on the urban climate and biodiversity and serve as places for experiencing nature and recreation. Citizens should therefore know where green spaces are located, what features they have and how they can best be reached on foot or by bicycle.

Project Goal
The aim of the project is the experimental development and testing of a novel infrastructure of services and the app "meinGrün" (myGreen), which leads to improved information on green spaces in cities. This should create incentives to make everyday mobility when visiting urban green spaces more sustainable and healthier. The app uses existing information and allows a user-specific assessment of green spaces as well as advanced routing algorithms taking into account new environmental parameters (e.g. shading, greenness, noise).

By combining existing open geodata with the latest remote sensing data from the Sentinel mission and Volunteered Geographic Information (OpenStreetMap, Social-Media), data on the physical structure, amenities, usage and perception of green spaces is derived. This information serves as input data for a decision support system for the selection of green spaces and a navigation to them. On the basis of the pilot cities Dresden and Heidelberg, the network of service infrastructure and the app will be developed and tested.
