LANALYS - analysis of landscape change and planning

Development of a model explaining the effects of local landscape planning on landscape change through indicators monitoring land use and landscape structure

The aim of LANALYS, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is to investigate whether and how local landscape planning affects landscape change positively in terms of an environmentally sustainable development.

To identify the steering effect of local landscape planning and the factors influencing landscape change, an empirical-statistical model based on a representative sample of German municipalities is being developed.

The impact of the implementation of local landscape plans on the development of certain land use types as well as landscape structures will be investigated with appropriate indicators based on spatial data. A larger number of dependent variables for German land use and landscape structure are already available through the nationwide "Monitoring of Settlement and Open Space Development" (IÖR-Monitor). Further factors influencing landscape change (e. g. natural region, rural vs. urban municipality, population, etc.) will be considered in order to enable a comparison between local landscape planning and these factors. For this, statistical and quantitative evaluation methods will be used.

The project will add principle-based scientific evidence to the German debate concerning the impact of the landscape planning on landscape change. Furthermore, it will contribute to the international discussion about the need of new approaches and methods for landscape planning in regard to the European Landscape Convention.
