at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ecological and Revitalizing Urban Transformation (IZS) in Görlitz

The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) is a member of the Leibniz Association and with 120 employees one of the largest spatial development research institutes in Germany. It carries out interdisciplinary research into issues of sustainable spatial development from an ecological perspective across all spatial scales. This involves the comprehensive analysis of current trends and dynamics, the assessment of impacts, and the investigation of responses in terms of societal behavior and policy. Of central importance to its research work is the review and further development of the policies, strategies, instruments, methods and tools needed for policy implementation.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Ecological and Revitalizing Urban Transformation (IZS) is a joint research and transfer facility of the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) and Technische Universität (TU) Dresden. The IZS is dealing with cities that are in particular affected by demographic and socio-economic change, and with strategies, processes and instruments of urban transformation towards revitalisation and sustainability.

Current research lines are

  • potentials of small and medium sized cities beyond metropoles in times of digitalisation and congested large cities
  • ecological urban development within the existing urban structure
  • revitalisation and adaptation of historic cities
  • urban transition towards sustainability, in particular urban dynamics of change, social innovation and governance

The successful PhD applicants will work within the IZS team in Görlitz. They take part in the structured program of Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS). A high quality dissertation is expected within three years.

We expect an above-average Diploma or Master degree in the fields of urban or spatial planning, social or policy science, social geography or comparable disciplines. The ability to work individually on own initiative as a part of a team and excellent German and/or English language skills are essential.
