Inner and Outer Technologies for Sustainability Transformation

Assoc. Prof. Dr. David Manuel-Navarrete
Arizona State University (USA)

Sustainable spatial transformations demand integrating inner and outer dimensions, including subjectivity, intentionality, and relationality, alongside structural and technological solutions. Yet sustainability science and policy often overlook the role of values, worldviews, and spiritual connections to the land. An alternative approach is “inclusive transdisciplinarity”, which focuses on horizontal co-production of knowledge and solutions co-designed with Indigenous and local communities. The SpiRitS Lab at ASU explores this approach through spiritual rituals that foster inner-outer transformations. Similarly, Solar Canoes Against Deforestation aligns green technologies with Indigenous needs, reducing fossil fuel reliance while supporting territorial autonomy, cultural revitalization, and sustainable livelihoods in the Amazon. The result is a vision of Earth Stewardship Hubs, where digital-age individuals learn to reconnect to the land by weaving inner work with modern technologies.
