IOER Forum on the use, integration and visualisation of geodata

Laser scan data, terrain models, land registers, land-use data – the academic, business and public sectors collect and compile data on a massive scale. And make it openly available. But how can the available data be used to generate added value for society and science – and not just by experts? The current spring series of the IOER Forum explores this question under the heading “Geodata – making it usable and accessible. Unlocking the potential for sustainable change”.

Tim Schnettker from CityLAB Berlin (Technologiestiftung Berlin) will kick off the series. He will focus on the users and present the newly developed Open-Data Engagement Shell Framework (ODES). Using practical examples, he will demonstrate what data products need to look like to be usable by various stakeholders, and how ODES helps to specifically bridge the gap between data publication and societal impact.

Sebastian Wichert from the LMU-ifo Economics & Business Data Centre (EBDC) will demonstrate how collaborations with companies can create sustainable added value for both the companies and for research. His presentation will outline key findings and recommendations from the handbook on best practices for accessing firm-level data through collaborations.

In the third talk, Thiemo Frömberg will focus on the processing and visualisation of data. At the intersection of geospatial and live data, design and science, the talk demonstrates how data-driven spatial installations can foster empathy and raise awareness of fragile habitats.
