Apply now: Doctoral scholarships for research on spatial aspects of sustainable innovations

Under the heading “Spatiality of sustainability-oriented innovation dynamics and transformation”, the Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS) is offering scholarships for a doctoral programme starting in March 2026. Interested candidates with a Master's degree and ideas for innovative research projects are invited to apply by 1 September.

Research on spatial dimensions of sustainability transformation, including innovation aspects, has been a growing field in the last decades. Significant progress has been made on mapping and explaining the uneven geographical landscape of sustainability-oriented innovations.

At the same time, however, there is still a considerable need for research. A key aim for science and policy alike is to better grasp the mutual interdependencies between the particular dynamics of sustainability-oriented innovation and spatial structures in order to shape forms of knowledge co-production and intervention that can purposefully drive transformations.

Against this backdrop, the Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS) invites applications that strive to explore and explain these complex linkages.

Background
DLGS is a joint initiative of the IOER and the TUD Dresden University of Technology. It offers excellent young researchers structured support for their doctorate in the spatial sustainability sciences. DLGS fellows are enrolled in various faculties at TUD and earn their doctoral degrees from the university, while being actively involved in relevant IOER research areas.
