Denksalon 2021: "Structural Change = Social Chance? – A turning point: the end of mining in Lusatia"

With the phase-out of lignite mining in 2038, Lusatia is facing its second major structural shift since the 1990s. This year, the "DENKSALON Ecological and Revitalising Urban Renewal" will deal with the challenges posed by this complex process. On 1 and 2 October 2021, interested people from science and practice are invited to the event series at the Schlesisches Museum in Görlitz.

Since 2018, the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) has been accompanying the structural transformation in Lusatia with its Interdisciplinary Centre for Transformative Urban Regeneration (IZS) in Görlitz. In the research project "Scientific support of the transformation process in Lusatia Region", the scientists are investigating the challenges and potentials of this structural policy process for the future of the region.

Building on previous findings, the project team now aims to foster the exchange of knowledge and experience between scientist and practitioners as well as with other lignite regions. Under the heading "Structural Change = Social Change? – A turning point: the end of mining in Lusatia ", the following questions among others will be discussed at the Denksalon 2021 on 1 and 2 October: How can we suitably address the complex set of problems and social challenges associated with structural change? Can such change be managed, planned or designed? How are federal states and municipalities tackling the challenges of structural change? What is their role? Who determines the future pathway?

The Denksalon is aimed at interested parties from academia and practice. Short impulse lectures on various aspects form the starting point for the interdisciplinary dialogue in the context of table discussions and a plenary discussion. The renowned sociologist Professor Heinz Bude is one of the keynote speakers of the Denksalon 2021.

Note on Corona regulations
The Denksalon 2021 is currently being planned as a face-to-face event at the Schlesisches Museum in Görlitz. The organising team is constantly reviewing the situation in the course of the Corona pandemic and will inform participants of changes in the planning and implementation of the event.
