Events for Doctoral Students

Doctoral Group

The Doctoral Group of the IOER constitutes an internal discussion forum. Regular formal and informal meetings take place to allow doctoral candidates to exchange views on their work and at the personal level. The Doctoral Group is also an interface between the management of the IOER and doctoral students. On their own responsibility, the Doctoral Group elects a spokesperson and deputy spokesperson, who together represent the interests of the doctoral student body.

Doctoral Students' Meetings

The IOER Doctoral Meeting provides the opportunity for scientific exchanges on individual doctoral projects. Projects in planning, in process, and completed are presented to a broad public. External doctoral candidates are invited to present their work where their subject fits in with the research priorities of the IOER. The IOER Doctoral Students' Meeting takes place once a year. All the staff of the Institute and external circles, especially supervisors, doctoral students from the TU Dresden, and colleagues from the Spatial Science Competence Centre are invited. The 5R Doctoral Meeting is part and climax of the joint activities of young researchers in the spatial science facilities of the Leibniz Association ARL, IfL, IOER, IRS and IFL. Since the first meeting in 2002, cooperation has developed into a successful network for the exchange of scientific expertise and organisation. The joint meeting of doctoral candidates is a two-day event that takes place once a year in Dresden, Erkner, Leipzig, and Dortmund in turn.

Doctoral Seminars

Doctoral Seminars are staged within the Institute at irregular interval on various topics. Substantive and methodological problems arising in particular projects are intensively discussed. The issues to be treated are formulated by the doctoral students concerned. Further seminars are held on specific methodological questions.

Doctoral Colloquium

Once a year the IOER organises a two-day colloquium for doctoral students where overarching topics (e.g., in the theory of science or methodology) are addressed and the substantive and organisational problems of dissertations are discussed. The colloquium fosters exchanges between doctoral students. Participants include both doctoral candidates and the IOER staff who are working on their doctorates or have recently completed them. The event takes place outside the IOER to make concentrated work possible. The colloquium is accompanied by an external speaker who holds a lecture on a certain subject and moderates the event.
